Rupert's Ridge

Heathcote Wines

Rupert’s Ridge is a boutique vineyard located in Redesdale, in the southern end of the Heathcote wine region. As the name suggests, the vines were planted atop a ridge overlooking the region, with Redesdale to the east and Mt Alexander to the north, at an altitude of 330m.

From the Ridge we overlook the Estate vineyards that stretch across four hectares – the majority of which is Shiraz; a variety the region is famed for; joined by a small proportion of Viognier and Vermentino.

Living by the motto of ‘fine wines from happy vines’ close attention is paid to the crop to ensure it is in optimum condition each harvest. You can’t make good wine from poor fruit and the health and wellbeing of our vines is paramount. Meticulous attention is paid to canopy management, closely monitoring moisture levels and hand pruning each vine so they benefit from new wood each year.

To capture even sunlight, our vines run north to south, on north facing hills in well-drained deep red podsolic soils punctuated with sandstone and quarts ridges. Not surprisingly the ‘hilly situation’ from the ridge provides well-ventilated vines, so there is little need for the use of chemicals during the growing season.

Winemaker Alan Cooper has brought Rupert’s Ridge to life, from vine to wine. Cooper employs traditional techniques, which include gentle crushing, open vat fermentation and basket pressing, followed by maturation in oak barrels to craft Rupert’s Ridge wines.

Currently the vineyard produces and abundance of superb grapes which are sold to well known wineries throughout this wonderful wine-making region.
